The Benefits Management Policy (BMP) defines how benefits must be managed across the Australian Government digital and ICT portfolio. The Policy supports agencies to deliver digital and ICT outcomes by detailing investment oversight requirements and providing guidance on benefits management. 

The BMP enables effective oversight and reporting of investment outcomes across government’s digital and ICT investment portfolio. It ensures agencies understand the requirements to successfully deliver outcomes Australians need.

The Major Program Starter Kit (the kit) is a collection of templates developed in collaboration with the Bureau of Meteorology. It draws on the Bureau of Meteorology’s experience delivering one of the Australian Government’s largest digital transformation programs. The kit provides key program artefacts commonly required for planning and governance to support the successful delivery of major digital programs. It has been shared by the Bureau for the benefit of other agencies. Agencies are encouraged to adapt the templates to suit the context and specific needs of their programs. DTA welcomes further contributions from agencies to help evolve the kit over time. The kit is not an exhaustive list, and its use is optional. View the Major Program Starter Kit.

The DTA partnered with academia and agencies to explore the most important issues influencing digital project performance. The digital project research series forms part of the DTA’s commitment to ensuring the Australian Government continuously improves how it designs and delivers digital projects including by drawing on global best practice and cutting-edge research. The Project Closure Reporting Standard for Digital and ICT-enabled Projects (the Standard) aims to uplift closure reporting practices. It ensures closure reports for digital projects consistently include a minimum set of information. Agencies self-assess draft project closure reports against 7 criteria included in the Standard. This includes project scope, schedule, benefits realisation, budget performance, assurance activities, transition to business-as-usual and lessons learned. To exemplify best practice, agencies should aim for strong alignment with all criteria prior to finalising closure reports. Use the template corresponding to your agency’s project tier.
